First lady throws support behind Eat Ghana Rice Campaign

First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo has thrown her support behind the ongoing “Eat Ghana Rice” campaign seeking to promote the consumption of produced-in-Ghana rice.

At a meeting with executives of the Ghana Millers Association and officials of the John A. Kufuor Foundation at her office in Accra, the first lady urged all Ghanaians to consume Ghana rice.

The first lady noted the consumption of Ghana rice will help create more jobs and ensure Ghanaians benefit health wise from nutritious Ghana rice.

As part of Mrs. Akufo-Addo’s efforts to promote Ghana rice, she announced only Ghana produced rice brands will be distributed by her office when she embarks on donation exercises.

She called for creative efforts to promote produced in Ghana foods, more of which she said are on the market currently because of government’s Planting for Food and Jobs programme.

Recent images of unsold Ghana rice produced in the north went viral on social media last month, sparking a campaign for increased consumption of Ghana rice.

The John A. Kufuor Foundation and the Ghana Rice (GRIB) Inter-Professional Body recently organized the Ghana Rice festival at the Efua Sutherlands Park in Accra to showcase Ghana rice brands and promote their consumption.

Policy Advisor at the foundation, Nana Ama Oppong-Duah assured the foundation will continue to work with other stakeholders to promote the consumption of Ghana rice. The move she noted will help keep the local economy and Ghana cedis strong.

President of the Ghana Rice Inter-Professional Body (GRIB) Nana Adjei Ayeh expressed gratitude to government for its support for farmers in the country which he said is encouraging tertiary graduates to venture into agriculture.

The rice sector stakeholders presented various brands of Ghana rice to the first lady at the end of the meeting.
