Kufuor Scholar Elected USAG General Secretary
Kufuor Scholar Joshua K. Opey of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has been elected general secretary of the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG).
He polled 90.84% of votes cast at the association’s recent congress held at the University of Energy and Natural resources UENR in Sunyani.
USAG comprises students of all public and other interested private universities. With over 35 institutional membership, it is the largest tertiary students’ association in the country.
The victory is a big moral boost for the Kufuor Scholars Program Class of 2020 member who has lost two previous student leadership contests.
In 2018, he lost the race to become vice president of his college students association (Ghana Engineering Students Association-GESA), finishing second place. Earlier this year, he also lost the race to become Student Representative Council (SRC) president at KNUST, finishing fourth place.
But he never gave up and kept pressing on. “You can achieve anything so far as you put your mind to it,” Opey said after his victory, adding, “this is a confirmation that with persistence and consistency, all our dreams can come true.”
Opey has been a long time achiever since his first year at KNUST. Herolled out an initiative dubbed, The HUB, – a campus media platform that sought to bring information to the door steps of students. Today, with over 5000 active following, The HUB is one of the leading media platforms at KNUST.
Upon realizing the stress fresh students had to go through getting access to course materials and senior course mates, Opey began his Opey Study initiative. This provides a better alternative for students to get the materials they need for quality education. He hopes to work with his colleague executives at USAG to introduce more exciting initiatives that will revolutionarise university education across the country as he begins his term.
